San Antonio Rampage News Release
ROCKFORD, IL (Dec. 7, 2016) - The San Antonio Rampage (10-11-1-0) served the Rockford IceHogs (7-12-2-2) their seventh-consecutive winless game in a 3-2 overtime victory on Wednesday evening at the BMO Harris Bank Center.
Joe Whitney collected the game-winning goal to top off a three-point night that earned him Second Star of the Game and moved him into third among San Antonio scorers with 12 points this season. Matt Lashoff's first-period goal with the man advantage was his third of the season, tying A.J. Greer for most power-play goals among Rampage scorers this year. Spencer Martin finished the night saving 29-of-31 shots on goal and earning First Star of the Game.
San Antonio opened the scoring in the first period when Mike Sislo netted a power-play goal at 7:59 from Gabriel Bourque and Whitney. The Rampage extended their lead to two as Lashoff collected a second power-play goal during a 5-on-3 man advantage off assists from Rocco Grimaldi and a second helper from Whitney with 20 seconds remaining in the frame.
Down 2-0 at the start of the second, Rockford would even out the game when Nick Schmaltz netted two goals in his IceHogs debut at the 10:43 and 19:41 marks. Primary assists were awarded to Spencer Abbott and Erik Gustafsson, while Tanner Kero lent a hand as the secondary helper on each goal.
A scoreless third stanza sent the Rampage into their third overtime in the last five games. Whitney solidified a San Antonio victory when he edged a pass from Sergei Boikov past Rockford netminder Jake Hildebrand 3:27 into the sudden-death period. The win was San Antonio's first overtime victory of the season.
