Rampage Open 2016 with 3-1 Loss to Gulls

January 1, 2016 - American Hockey League (AHL)
San Antonio Rampage News Release

SAN ANTONIO - The San Antonio Rampage (14-12-7-0) lost their first game of 2016 to the San Diego Gulls (16-12-0-1) 3-1 in front of 6,286 at the AT&T Center on Friday night. Reid Petryk scored the lone goal for the Rampage, and the Silver and Black finished 1-for-3 on the power play.

The Rampage and the Gulls were scoreless after the opening period, just the fourth time this season that San Antonio has played a scoreless first frame. The Gulls picked up the first goal of the game early in the second period, as Mike Sgarbossa's shot from the slot trickled past Spencer Martin. San Diego struck again just over two minutes later when Sgarbossa hit Nick Ritchie on a give-and-go down the ice.

The Silver and Black made it a 2-1 game at 10:22 of the middle frame. Joey Hishon's backhand pass from behind the goal line found the tape of Reid Petryk, who punched the puck past Anton Khudobin, sending the Rampage into the second intermission trailing by one.

Chris Mueller's empty-net power-play goal with less than a minute left in regulation secured a 3-1 win for the Gulls, who remain in second place in the Pacific Division.

Notes

With the primary assist on Petryk's second-period goal, Joey Hishon extended his point streak to five games and now has eight points (3G, 5A) in the Rampage's last five contests.

Lineup Notes

San Antonio's lines remained almost identical to the lines coach Dean Chynoweth ran in Tuesday's game against the Texas Stars. Dan Maggio drew into the lineup, skating on the fourth line with Troy Bourke and Alex Belzile. Spencer Martin started in goal.

The Rampage and the Gulls meet again on Sunday at 4 p.m. at the AT&T Center, which will be a Y-100 Sunday Funday. Individual and season tickets are available and can be purchased by calling a Rampage representative at 210-444-5554 or online at sarampage.com.
