Springfield, MA - The Springfield Falcons' rookies paved the way in a 2-1 win against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers at the MassMutual Center on Friday night.
The Falcons struck first with a goal from rookie forward Michael Bunting who ripped a wrist shot past goaltender Stephon Williams at 3:57. The rookie scored his fourth of the season with assists credited to Corey Potter and Jordan Szwarz. Rookie defenseman Dakota Mermis extended the lead with a wrist shot from the point for his first AHL goal. The rookie defenseman scored at 15:24 with helpers from Alex Grant and Dustin Jeffrey. The Falcons outshot the Sound Tigers 9-8 in the frame. Rookie netminder Marek Langhamer backstopped the Falcons to a 2-0 lead heading into the second period.
Parker Milner took over the job in net for the Sound Tigers after Williams was pulled after the first period. The teams skated to a scoreless second period with the Falcons outshooting the Sound Tigers 11-9. Only one infraction occurred in the period with Bridgeport whistled on a too many men penalty at 18:49. Forward Mike Halmo served the penalty that carried into the third stanza.
Bridgeport created a threat by closing the lead 7:01 into the third period. Jared Gomes scored from the slot to bring the game to a 2-1 score. His fourth of the year was started by Kyle Burroughs who fed Gomes behind the net. The forward took it to the slot to bring the game within one goal. Despite pulling Milner, the Sound Tigers could not score in the final minute as Langhamer collected his first AHL win stopping all 23 shots. Milner, who stopped all 16 shots faced, did not factor in the decision. Williams fell to 7-7-1 with seven saves on nine shots in the first period.
