Lancaster Stormers News Release
Bad things are not supposed to happen to the team in the field with a count of no balls and two strikes.
On Sunday night, bad things happened four times on the pitcher's ultimate count as Sugar Land went on to defeat the Lancaster Barnstormers, 4-3, in 10 innings in the series finale at Constellation Field.
Dominick Ramos, who had been 1-for-20 in the Atlantic League, delivered the final blow Sunday evening with a two-out solo homer to left off Jeff Bennett (2-2) after Bennett had gotten the first two strikes in.
Two critical plays in the ninth also came on 0-2 pitches. With one out and Victor Gutierrez at first, Jason Botts ripped a single into center while down two strikes, sending Gutierrez to third with the tying run. Tim Hamulack then bounced an 0-2 pitch to Ofilio Castro past catcher Emerson Frostad, pushing the game to extra innings.
Even starter John Halama was victimized on an 0-2 pitch as Botts slammed a long homer to left leading off the seventh that cut the Barnstormers lead to 3-2.
The Barnstormers grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Terry Tiffee singled up the middle to score Blake Gailen who had walked and stolen second. That lead expanded in the fifth. Brad Boyer led off with a single and swiped second. Jaime Pedroza drew a walk, and both runners moved ahead on Frostad's sacrifice bunt. Starter Derrick Gordon retired Adam Godwin on a foul popup, but Manny Mejia mishandled a pitch to Gailen, allowing Boyer to score.
Josh Pressley and Tommy Everidge exchanged homers over the next full inning for the 3-1 Lancaster lead.
Halama allowed four hits and the two runs over eight innings for his fourth quality start. Sugar Land's Derrick Gordon yielded four hits and three runs, two earned, over six frames, the sixth straight lefty starter to suppress the Lancaster bats.
Ryan Houston (1-1) worked a perfect 10th to earn the win for the Skeeters.
Lancaster flies home early in the morning to host the Somerset Patriots Monday evening at 7:00. The game can be heard on WLAN, 1390-AM and on WPDC, 1600-AM as well as their respective websites, beginning at 6:45. J.D. Durbin (1-2) will pitch for Lancaster against lefty Doug Arguello (1-1).
NOTES: Adam Godwin's hitting streak was snapped at 16 games...Tiffee stretched his streak to 10 with the first inning single...Everidge hit his second homer of the season...Oddly, both have come leading off the sixth inning in a game started by Gordon...Off the last six lefty starters, the Barnstormers have managed seven runs on 32 hits in 38 2/3 innings of work...Lancaster falls to .500 for the first time since they were 7-7 following a loss to Camden on May 10.
