Ramon Torres' Late-Inning Heroics Break Pelicans' Hearts
April 28, 2015 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
WILMINGTON, DEL. (APRIL 28, 2015) - Despite a 2-0 early lead, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, suffered a 3-2 extra innings defeat on Tuesday night at Frawley Stadium. The Pelicans have now lost four straight but still hold a share of first place in the Southern Division.
Two walks set up the tenth inning rally, and with two outs, Ramon Torres lined a ball to left off of Pelicans reliever Tayler Scott to win it, scoring Dominique Taylor from third. Torres had three hits on the night.
The game made extra innings only after Wilmington (9-9) rallied back from a two-run deficit.
Myrtle Beach (9-8) plated a run in each of the first two innings off of Blue Rocks starter Alec Mills. With two outs in the first, Mills surrendered four straight baserunners. Billy McKinney and Jeimer Candelario both singled. Jacob Rogers then worked a seven-pitch walk, and, with the bases loaded, Victor Caratini drew an RBI walk, putting Myrtle Beach ahead 1-0.
The Birds tacked on another in the second. In his Pelicans debut, Trey Martin led off the frame with a single to left field. He advanced to second on a balk and to third on a sacrifice bunt from Wes Darvill. Mark Zagunis then singled to center to balloon the lead to 2-0.
That's all the runs that Myrtle Beach would muster, however. They collected just four hits and five baserunners the rest of the way and didn't get a runner into scoring position again until Darvill doubled in the tenth.
The Blue Rocks scored their first run in the fourth on a two-out RBI single by Mauricio Ramos, scoring Torres. Tseng, James Pugliese, and Jasvir Rakkar then held Wilmington scoreless until the ninth inning.
In the ninth, Rakkar retired the first two hitters, but Frank Schwindel doubled to the left center field wall, and Zane Evans then notched a two-bagger of his own to tie it up, sending the game to extra innings.
The loss was the first in extra innings this year for Myrtle Beach (2-1 in extra inning games) and the first such win for Wilmington (1-2).
Scott (1-1) pitched the tenth and suffered the loss, while Estarlin Cordero (1-0), who retired the final man in the tenth, earned his first win.
The three-game series continues on Wednesday when the Pelicans and Blue Rocks square off at Frawley Stadium at 6:35 p.m. ET. Myrtle Beach sends righty Jonathan Martinez (0-1, 3.27) to the bump against Wilmington southpaw Eric Skoglund (1-1, 3.18).
The game can be heard live, presented by Courtyard Myrtle Beach at Barefoot Landing, on 1450 WRNN-AM ESPN Myrtle Beach, on the TuneIn Radio App, and via the MiLB First Pitch App, beginning with the Pregame Show at 6:15 p.m. ET.
The 2015 season marks the 17th season for the Pelicans franchise and first as the Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Chicago Cubs. For information on tickets to see the Pelicans in 2015, please call (843) 918-6000, e-mail info@myrtlebeachpelicans.com, or visit www.MyrtleBeachPelicans.com.
