Keys Fall Short in 4-3 Setback at Salem
April 28, 2015 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Frederick Keys News Release
FREDERICK, Md. - The Keys had the tying run at third base in the seventh and ninth frames, but couldn't even it up, eventually falling 4-3 to the Salem Red Sox on Tuesday night. Keys starter Luis Gonzalez struggled with command early, allowing three first inning runs, and the Red Sox bullpen tossed five innings of shutout baseball to take the first game of three.
In the bottom of the first, Gonzalez walked Manuel Margot, Cole Sturgeon, and Sam Travis to begin the inning. The fifth batter of the frame, Aneury Tavarez, drilled a ball into the left-center alley for a bases-clearing triple and 3-0 Salem advantage. Gonzalez would settle down and allow just one more free pass in five innings of work.
In the third, Gonzalez committed an error that would end up leading to the game-winning run. After Sturgeon and Travis knocked back-to-back singles to begin the inning, Sturgeon took off for third base while Jake Romanski was at the plate. Gonzalez stepped off and attempted a pick-off at third, however his throw was wild and down the left field line. Sturgeon scored and Salem led 4-0.
The Keys would respond with a three-run inning of their own in the top of the fourth. Against Salem starter Jake Dahlstrand, who entered with the third-best ERA in the Carolina League at 0.95, Brenden Webb, Tucker Nathans, and Austin Wynns all reached to load the bases. Anthony Caronia and Gregory Lorenzo knocked in a run each with a fielder's choice to make it 4-2. Johnny Ruettiger doubled to right field to score Lorenzo, however Ruettiger was thrown out trying to extend it into a triple and put an end to the threat, keeping the score 4-3.
The Keys had chances in the seventh and ninth innings against Salem relievers. Ruettiger reached third base against Jorge Marban, however was stranded there after Trey Mancini grounded out with two away. In the ninth, Caronia singled against Joe Gunkel and got to third base, however Adrian Marin's long fly out to center gave the first game to the Red Sox.
Marban received his first win at Class-A Advanced (1-1), while Gonzalez took the loss (1-2). Joe Gunkel picked up the save (2).
The Keys will continue the three-game series tomorrow at 11:05 a.m. Right-hander Jarrett Miller (0-0, 6.92) toes the rubber and will be countered by Red Sox lefty Trey Ball (1-1, 5.06). The broadcast can be heard on 1450 AM The Source and frederickkeys.com. The Keys return home on May 5, when the Winston-Salem Dash come to town.
