KODAK, Tenn. - The Chicago Cubs have announced that they have acquired RHP Neil Ramirez from the Texas Rangers and assigned him to their Double-A affiliate Tennessee Smokies. In a corresponding roster move, RHP Dayan Diaz has been released from the Cubs organization.
Ramirez, 24, completes the July 22 trade that brought INF Mike Olt, RHP Justin Grimm and RHP CJ Edwards and a player to be named later to the Cubs for RHP Matt Garza.
The Virginia Beach, Va. native has spent all of this season with the Double-A Frisco RoughRiders, where he held a 9-3 record with a 3.84 ERA in 21 starts. In 103 innings pitched, the right-hander allowed 46 runs (44 earned) on 77 hits, striking out 127, compared to 42 walks. He led the Texas League with 127 strikeouts and ranked fifth with nine victories. Currently in his sixth professional season, Ramirez holds a career record of 36-35 with a 4.40 ERA (281 ER/575 IP) in 133 appearances (126 starts) with 240 walks and 604 strikeouts.
Ramirez was originally drafted by the Rangers in the first round (44th overall) of the 2007 draft out of Kempsville High School in Virginia Beach, Va.
Diaz, 24, held no record with a 5.14 ERA (4 ER/7 IP) in five relief appearances with the Smokies this season. The Cartagena, Columbia native signed a minor league contract with the Cubs in 2012.
