Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
FRISCO - RoughRiders starting pitcher Neil Ramirez allowed two hits in six innings and Alex Buchholz hit a first-inning home run to lead Frisco over Corpus Christi 2-0 Thursday night at Dr Pepper Ballpark in front of a crowd of 5,832.
Jake Buchanan started for the Hooks (1-2, 43-30) and ran into trouble in the bottom of the first inning. With two outs, Brett Nicholas tripled to right field and Alex Buchholz followed with his seventh home run of the season down the left field line. The ball bounced off the foul pole according to third base umpire and crew chief Gabriel Morales, but several Hooks players immediately argued the call. Manager Keith Bodie inspired the umpires to conference about the decision, but the home run stood and Frisco led 2-0.
Ramirez (9-2) stifled Corpus Christi hitters for six innings, as he allowed just two hits, both to Erik Castro, and struck out six. He faced the minimum number of hitters in five of his six innings.
Following the first inning Buchanan (7-2) matched Ramirez frame-for-frame. The North Carolina State product bounced back from a pair of tough outings and allowed two runs on four hits in six innings.
After Ramirez, Frisco (2-1, 41-32) manager Steve Beuchele turned to his stout bullpen. Jimmy Reyes pitched an inning. Joakim Soria, on a rehab assignment from the Texas Rangers, pitched a perfect frame in his first professional appearance since undergoing "Tommy John" surgery. And Wilmer Font closed out the game to record his ninth save.
For Corpus Christi, Carlos Quevedo tossed two perfect innings after being activated from the disabled list earlier in the day and Sergio Escalona pitched the eighth inning.
The series will continue Friday at 7:05 PM when Frisco's Kevin Pucetas (7-6) takes the mound against the Corpus Christi tandem of Nick Tropeano (2-5) and Bobby Doran (6-1).
