Worcester Tornadoes News Release
WORCESTER, MA-In what started off as a classic pitching duel between both starters, Brockton's late inning surge proved to be the difference on the day, defeating the Worcester Tornadoes 3-2 before Sunday's crowd at Hanover Insurance Park.
Four consecutive hits in the eighth for Brockton, led by Joe Hough's two run homerun allowed the visiting Rox to win their first weekend game of the year.
Josh Beauregard broke up John Boker's bid for a no-hitter in the seventh as he laced a single to left. Chris Colabello then followed with a towering shot to left, putting the first runs of the day on the board, and giving the Tornadoes a 2-0 lead.
The Rox countered with three of their own off Tornado reliever Jamie Merchant in the top of the eighth inning, as Mike Torres lead off with a single and was followed with a homerun to left by Hough, tying the score at 2-2. Brad Rosenblat and Mike Scanzano continued the inning with consecutive singles and the Rox took the lead when Francisco Lebron doubled home Rosenblat.
Matt Weagle (1-0) earned a no decision, going seven innings, allowing just three hits and no runs. Weagle looked strong all afternoon, before being taken out in the eighth inning. Jamie Merchant (1-1) took the loss for the Tornadoes as he pitched 1/3 of an inning, giving up all three of Brockton's runs on five hits. Brockton's John Boker (5-1) went seven innings, allowing just two hits on two runs scored. Kyle George notched his first save of the season.
