Spirit suffer second straight loss

North Shore Spirit News Release

In a game that included five hit batters and an ejection, the Quebec Capitales came from behind Sunday afternoon to pick up an 8-7 victory over the North Shore Spirit at Fraser Field.

Jason Pilkington (2-0) pitched 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief to pick up the win. Cristian Mendoza recorded the final three outs for his 7th save of the year. Denis Robinson (1-3) suffered the loss for North Shore.

The Spirit jumped out to an early lead, putting a five spot on the board in the first. With one out and runners on the corners, Andrew Wishy doubled into the gap in right-center, scoring BJ Weed with the games first run. Jeff Brooks followed with a mammoth 3-run shot over the center field fence, his 4th homerun of the season. Luis Sabino would add an RBI double, extending the North Shore advantage to 5-0.

Quebec would respond with a pair of runs in the second and another run in the third. Eddie Lantigua and Mick Kurhan each picked up RBI's for Les Capitales.

North Shore tacked on a single run in the fifth. Alex Trezza scored on a JD Reininger sacrifice fly, pushing the Spirit's lead back to three runs.

The momentum would swing back to Quebec in the seventh. After Beniot Emond had tied the game with an RBI single, Kurhan delivered a run scoring basehit that gave Les Capitales their first lead, 7-6.

The lead was short lived, however, as the Spirit would push across the tying run in the bottom half of the inning. With runners on first and second and one out, an error by third baseman Alex Garcia allowed Ryan Bethel to score, knotting the game at seven.

The game would stay deadlocked until the ninth. A two-out error by Vic Davilla allowed Simon Legare to score what proved to be the game-winning run.

The Spirit will be back in action Monday night when they welcome the New Jersey Jackals to Fraser Field for the start of a three game series. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
