New Jersey Jackals News Release

Little Falls, NJ: Coming into this series, the first-ever regular season meetings between cross-town rivals Sussex Skyhawks and New Jersey Jackals, fans might have expected a close, hard-fought string of games. But after handing out a doubleheader shellacking to the hawks yesterday, trouncing them by a combined score of 23-0, the hometown Jackals picked up right where they left off, completing one of the most lopsided sweeps in franchise history by a final score of 7-2.

Sunday was a sticky but beautiful day for baseball at Yogi Berra Stadium, and fans who came out to either of the two previous games of the weekend were treated to a 4th of July holiday special with free admission to the game. But the treat certainly did not stop there, as the New Jersey Jackals brought out their brooms and handily swept away the Sussex Skyhawks. As if the Jackals needed more confidence coming off of their doubleheader fireworks extravaganza, Skyhawks starting pitcher Lincoln Mincks was very hittable right from the beginning of the day. Mincks was comfortable leaving the ball over the plate and letting his fielders do the work, and the Jackals offense made him pay for it. After Sussex got on the board first in the top of the 3rd inning with an RBI by CF James Cooper, the Jackals immediately came back in the bottom of the 3rd to even things up and they would never look back from there.

Every Jackals starter had at least one hit in the game, as the offense continued to roll on all cylinders. "The Mayor" John Lindsey earned player of the game honors, going 3-4 and winding up a triple away from the cycle. His 2 run homer in the bottom of the 5th inning gave the Jackals a comfortable lead, and it would only be extended as the game progressed. New Jersey ace Joel Bennett turned in a stellar performance, making his second start of the season. Bennett threw 7 strong innings, giving up 2 runs on just 4 hits while striking out 6. Meanwhile, Mincks gave up 5 runs on 14 hits over his 7 innings of work. With their first sweep of the season complete, the Jackals will head to North Shore to do battle with the Spirit and hopefully keep the momentum going as the end of the seasons first half is in sight.
