Tacoma Rainiers News Release

Tacoma, WA - The Tacoma Rainiers utilized some late-inning heroics to slip past Round Rock 8-5 at Cheney Stadium on Sunday.

Designated hitter Mike Carp broke open a 5-5 tie in the bottom of the 10th inning with a three-run home run to the seal the victory for the Rainiers. The blast was Carp's 20th of the season and gave to Tacoma a 2-1 lead in their four-game series with the Express.

The extra-innings effort by the Rainiers was made possible after back-to-back blasts erased a 5-3 Round Rock lead in the ninth. Catcher Eliezer Alfonzo led off the inning with a solo home run. Outfielder Greg Halman followed suit and blasted his 27th home run in the team's next at-bat.

Earlier in the outing it was the Express who took advantage of the power game to wipe out a 3-0 lead from Tacoma. Outfielder Collin DeLome hit a grand slam with one out in the fifth to highlight an inning that saw Round Rock score five runs on just two hits.

Reliever Andy Baldwin garnered his team-leading eighth win of the season after tossing five scoreless innings of relief work over the sixth through the 10th, while fanning six batters.

Round Rock right-hander Gary Majewski was dealt the loss, giving up Carp's home run following 1/3 innings of work out of the bullpen.

Tacoma starter Mauricio Robles was left with a no decision in his Rainiers debut. The right-hander surrendered five runs on three hits with four walks and eight punchouts over five innings.

The Rainiers begin the final game of their four-game set with the Express at 7pm on Monday. Top Mariners prospect Michael Pineda(3-2, 3.67) gets the nod for Tacoma in the series finale, with right-hander Jordan Lyles (0-1, 6.00) slated to take the mound for Round Rock.
