
Rainiers Top Cubs 5-3 In Series Opener

DES MOINES, Iowa - The Tacoma Rainiers opened a four-game road series against the Iowa Cubs on Thursday night with a 5-3 victory.
Rainiers starting pitcher Mike Montgomery (4-3) tossed 6.0 innings, holding the Cubs offense to three runs on seven hits while striking out six to earn his fourth win of the year.
Tony Zych, Kevin Gregg, and Dominic Leone combined for 3.0 scoreless innings out of the Tacoma bullpen, earning Zych and Gregg holds while Leone racked up his first save of the season.
Two walks and a Ketel Marte stolen base in the first inning set up Jesus Montero's two-out RBI to put the Rainiers on the board with an early 1-0 lead.
Patrick Kivlehan opened the second inning with a leadoff walk, moved to second on a passed ball, advanced to third on a Jesus Sucre groundout, and came around to score on an RBI single from James Jones to extend Tacoma's lead to 2-0.
Iowa answered back with one in the bottom of the second run on doubles from Taylor Davis and Chris Valaika, cutting the Rainiers lead in half at 2-1.
A pair of walks, one fielding error, and two hits led to a two-run third inning for the Rainiers - Franklin Gutierrez's RBI pop out and Kivlehan's RBI single gave Tacoma a 4-1 lead.
Taylor Teagarden capitalized on back-to-back walks issued by Montgomery at the beginning of the third inning with an RBI single to score Matt Szczur, making the score 4-2.
Iowa's Arismendy Alcantara sent out a solo homer in the fifth inning to pull the Cubs within one run at 4-3.
Tacoma pushed across one final run in the top of the eighth inning to put the game out of reach, earning the 5-3 victory to start an eight-game road streak.
The Rainiers (18-23) send right-hander Stephen Landazuri (0-0, 3.00) to the mound to during game two of the series tomorrow, May 22. Iowa (19-20) will counter with right-hander Carlos Pimentel (2-2, 3.62). First pitch is scheduled for 5:05 p.m.
