Big Fourth Makes Four Straight Losses for Aces

OMAHA - A five-run fourth inning for the Omaha Storm Chasers led to a 9-6 win over the visiting Reno Aces (@Aces) Thursday night at Werner Park.

Nick Evans' RBI single gave the Aces (18-22) a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. It scored Danny Dorn who tripled with one out in the opening frame.

Aces starter Justin Marks made quick work of the Storm Chasers (19-22) in the first three innings - he faced one over the minimum and recorded three strikeouts in the first three frames.

The fourth wasn't as kind to the left-hander. Armed with a 2-0 lead, the bottom of the fourth began with Marks issuing a free pass to Raymond Fuentes. Cheslor Cuthbert singled to left and Brett Eibner walked to load the bases with no outs.

Omaha left-fielder Jose Martinez laced a single to left, scoring Fuentes and Cuthbert to even the game at 2-2. Marks retired Orlando Calixte on a fly out to center for the second out of the inning. That's when Matt Fields gave the Storm Chasers the lead for good with a three-run home run to left-center. The home run chased Marks who was charged with five runs in 3 2/3 innings.

The Aces cut the deficit to 5-4 in the top of the fifth when Nick Evans blasted a two-run homer after Peter O'Brien singled through the left side. Evans has 17 RBI in his last seven games, and 24 in the month of May.

Cuthbert gave the Storm Chasers and insurance run when he knocked a base hit to right in the bottom half of the fifth.

The Aces put runners on second and third with one out in the sixth but couldn't score. A double play wiped out another baserunner in the seventh inning.

Omaha extended their lead to 9-4 with three runs in the bottom of the seventh. Reno's Jarrod Saltalamacchia launched a two-run homer to cut the lead to 9-6 in the top of the eighth, but that's as close as they'd get.

Michael Mariot retired Evans, O'Brien and Jamie Romak in order in the ninth to earn his first save of the season for Omaha.

Reno finished the game with 14 hits and lost for just the sixth time when out-hitting the opponent.

Game two of the series is set for Friday night in Omaha. Right-hander Caleb Clay (@CalebClay) (4-1, 4.13) starts for the Aces against left-hander John Lamb (3-1, 2.89) for the Storm Chasers. First pitch is scheduled for 5:05 PST.
