Tacoma Rainiers News Release

Tacoma, WA - The Tacoma Rainiers jumped out to a 5-0 lead and added on late for a 8-4 win over the Sidewinders on Friday night.

Tacoma built a 3-0 lead just four batters into the bottom of the first inning with four straight hits against Sidewinders starter Juan Gutierrez. Tug Hulett led off with a single and Yung Chi Chen homered to left to give Tacoma a 2-0 lead. After Jeremy Reed singled, Victor Diaz doubled to make it a 3-0 game.

Gutierrez suffered his league leading seventh loss of the season. The Sidewinders right-hander allowed five runs on nine hits in five innings. He struck out five and walked one and has now allowed 15 first inning runs in his nine starts.

The Sidewinders drew to within a run by scoring a pair in the fifth and sixth innings. Wilkin Castillo and Donnie Kelly had RBI in the fifth and Jamie D'Antona belted a two run home run to right in the sixth making it a 5-4 game. Tacoma won the battle of the bullpens from there, however, as the Rainiers relievers shut the Sidewinders out over the final three innings while Tucson's bullpen allowed a run in the sixth and two in the seventh.

Alex Romero went 0 for 4 to snap his hitting streak at 14.

The Sidewinders and Rainiers play game three of their series on Saturday night at Cheney Stadium. Right-hander Yusmeiro Petit (0-1, 3.95) starts for Tucson against left-hander Ryan Feierabend (4-1, 1.67) for Tacoma. First pitch is at 7:00. The game will air live on COOL 1450 beginning at 6:50.
