Portland Beavers News Release
PORTLAND, Ore. - Chase Headley homered for a third straight game and Chip Ambres delivered a go-ahead, sixth-inning triple as the Portland Beavers came back to beat the Las Vegas 51s 3-2 before 5,944 Friday night at PGE Park.
With the victory, the Beavers, who made the most of their five hits and overcame a season-high four errors, extended their home-winning streak to seven games and evened their season series with Las Vegas at three games apiece.
The Beavers (19-20) dug themselves a 2-0 hole, but Headley's fourth-inning solo homer to deep right-center cut Las Vegas' lead in half. Peter Ciofrone led off the bottom of the sixth with a triple and Brian Myrow walked to set the table for Ambres' one-out triple against starter Miguel Pinango.
Enrique Gonzalez turned in his best effort of the season, working five innings in his fifth start and holding the 51s to two runs (1 earned) on five hits and three walks to go with four strikeouts. Mauro Zarate (1-0) spelled him in the sixth and picked up his first win after tossing two scoreless innings.
Things got interesting in the ninth as Danny Ardoin reached on a leadoff single and an error by closer Jared Wells allowed John-Ford Griffin to reach with no outs. The 51s (20-21) eventually put runners on second and third with two outs, but Wells got Terry Tiffee, the league's leading hitter, to ground out to secure his eighth save.
Despite recording his fifth quality start of the year, Pinango (2-3) was on the wrong end of the decision. The right-hander yielded three runs, four hits and three walks in his six innings of work.
Angel Chavez broke the ice in the third, reaching on a leadoff single, advancing to third on Andy LaRoche's double and scoring on a groundout. The Beavers' third error of the game - an errant throw down to second by catcher Nick Hundley on a stolen base attempt - allowed LaRoche to score from third.
The Beavers entertain the 51s again Saturday night at 7:05 p.m.
NOTES: Kevin Howard drew three walks for Las Vegas ... Ambres has hit safely in 16 of his last 19 games ... four of Portland's five hits went for extra bases.
