Tacoma Rainiers News Release
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- The Tacoma Rainiers fell to the Colorado Springs Sky Sox 8-4 in the series opener between the two clubs at Security Service Field on Saturday.
Rainiers starter Danny Hultzen (0-1) struggled early and was dealt a loss in his Triple-A debut. The second overall pick by the Seattle Mariners in the 2011 draft, Hultzen surrendered five runs on five hits and issued five walks with three strikeouts over 3.0 innings.
Designated hitter Luis Jimenez put the Rainiers up 1-0 in the top of the first with a triple that scored infielder Nick Franklin from second base with two outs.
The score held until the bottom of the inning when Sky Sox infielder Brandon Wood drove in the tying run with a double down the right-field line. Colorado Springs took a 3-1 lead after first baseman Chad Tracy drove in two more runs with a two-RBI single in the Sky Sox next at-bat.
RBI-doubles hit by Darren Ford and Alex Liddi, along with a one-run single from Jimenez, helped the Rainiers tie the game at 4-4 in the top of the third inning, but Tommy Field scored on a wild pitch thrown by the starter Hultzen to ultimately put the Sky Sox ahead for good in the bottom of the frame.
Jimenez, Ford and first baseman Luis Rodriguez combined to collect six of the Rainiers nine hits in the series opener after each turned in two-hit performances.
Reliever Steven Hensley (3.0) and Chance Ruffin (2.0) combined to allow three runs - one earned - on seven hits and struck out two over 5.0 innings of work out of the bullpen.
The Rainiers (31-44) play the second leg of the club's four-game series at Colorado Springs (37-38) at 12:05 p.m. tomorrow, June 24. Right-hander Andrew Carraway (2-2, 3.51) is scheduled to start for Tacoma in the contest against Sky Sox left-hander Drew Pomeranz (2-4, 3.06).
