SALT LAKE CITY, Utah-Geoff Blum hit a fifth-inning grand slam on his Major League Rehabilitation Assignment Saturday, sparking a 12-4 come-from-behind victory for the Reno Aces over the Salt Lake Bees in the series opener at Spring Mobile Ballpark.
The Aces trailed by a run through four frames, but would take control for good in the fifth. After two quick outs, walks for Jake Elmore and A.J. Pollock sandwiched a single by Ryan Wheeler to load the bases. Blum then quickly deposited the first pitch he saw over the wall in right field, giving the Aces a lead they would not relinquish.
Barry Enright (6-4) earned the win for Reno, scattering four runs on five hits with nine strikeouts over six innings of work. After his exit, Taylor Sinclair worked two perfect frames, and Joe Paterson dealt a spotless ninth.
The loss fell to Salt Lake reliever Steven Geltz (0-1), who surrendered Blum's homer in the fifth. Bees starter Brad Mills allowed three runs over three innings.
At the plate for the Aces, Elmore doubled home two runs in the sixth inning, extending his hitting streak to a Pacific Coast League best and career-high 30 games. Adam Eaton singled and scored a run, stretching his on-base streak to 37-straight games. Ryan Wheeler hit a three-run home run in the ninth inning, becoming the first Minor League batter this season to reach the 70-RBI plateau.
The Aces and Bees continue the series on Sunday afternoon. RHP Trevor Bauer (4-0, 2.79 ERA) gets the nod for Reno, while RHP Matt Shoemaker (5-7, 5.74 ERA) counters for Salt Lake. First pitch from Spring Mobile Ballpark is set for 12:05 p.m. PT, and the action can be heard live on Fox Sports Radio 630 AM in Reno or by visiting RenoAces.com.
The Aces will return home on Wednesday, June 27 to kick-off a seven-game homestand against the Fresno Grizzlies and Las Vegas 51s. Tickets are on-sale now at RenoAces.com, by calling (775) 334-7000 or by visiting the Aces Ballpark Ticket Office.
