Cleburne Railroaders News Release
CLEBURNE, Texas - John Menken hit a grand slam in his Railroaders debut, and Cleburne salvaged the series finale with an 11-5 win over the Wichita Wingnuts at The Depot on Thursday night.
Menken made his first start of the year and went 3-for-4 with the grand slam in the 4th inning and singles in the 2nd and 7th innings. Cleburne scored a season-best 11 runs, surpassing the 10 it scored on May 23 against Fargo-Moorhead.
The Wingnuts jumped out to an early lead with a two-out rally that culminated in a Tony Thomas three-run homer in the 1st inning.
Cleburne answered in the 2nd with a bases-loaded walk from Alex Polston followed up by a sacrifice fly from Blake Grant-Parks. John Menken later scored on a passed ball to tie the game.
Before Menken's grand slam in the 4th, Levi Scott hit an RBI single to give Cleburne its first lead of the night.
Trevor Sealey, who had four extra-base hits in the series, went 2-for-4 with a double and a two-run homer that gave Cleburne a 10-3 lead after four innings.
The Wingnuts scored twice more on Fernando Perez's two-run homer in the 8th inning, and Cleburne starter Jared Mortensen wound up allowing five runs on eight hits with two walks and 10 strikeouts over eight innings of work. He threw a season-high 139 pitches after throwing 117 in each of his last two starts.
Levi Scott went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a pair of runs scored, while Patrick Palmeiro also reached twice and knocked an RBI double. Rafael Palmeiro hit two more singles and reached 10 times in the four-game series. Cleburne knocked around Wichita starter Jordan Cooper, who surrendered 10 runs over seven innings of work.
