Wingnuts Drop Series Finale in Cleburne

June 14, 2018 - American Association (AA) - Wichita Wingnuts News Release

CLEBURNE, Tex. (June 12, 2018) - The Wichita Wingnuts saw an early lead slip away in their pursuit of a sweep, falling 11-5 to the Cleburne Railroaders in the series finale Thursday night at The Depot.

Wichita staked an early lead as the offense built a first inning rally with two-outs. Abel Nieves drew a walk to extend the frame and advanced to third on a base hit by Fernando Perez. Tony Thomas belted his seventh homer of the year to left-center to give Wichita to a 3-0 lead.

But the momentum failed to continue as the Railroaders tied the game in the second with three consecutive singles to load the bases. Alex Polston forced home a run on a walk before a sacrifice fly from Blake Grant-Parks pulled Cleburne within one. A passed ball brought home the tying run.

Cleburne capitalized on the momentum in the third as they loaded the bases against Wingnuts starter Jordan Cooper. Levi Scott singled home a run to give the Railroaders their first lead of the game. John Menken promptly hit a grand slam to cap a five-run inning.

Trevor Sealey added a two-run homer for the Railroaders in the fourth, stretching the Cleburne lead to 10-3.

Wichita received a two-run home run of its own, as Fernando Perez went yard in the top of the eighth to plate Nieves and trim the lead to 10-5.

Patrick Palmeiro doubled home the Railroaders last run in the bottom of the eighth to provide the game's final score.

The Wingnuts will open up a three-game series in Grand Prairie, Texas on Friday night at 7:05 against the Texas AirHogs. The series will conclude a seven-game road trip.
