Wichita Wingnuts News Release
CLEBURNE, Tex. - The Wichita Wingnuts scored four runs in the top of the ninth inning, rallying past the Cleburne Railroaders to clinch the series with a 6-3 victory at The Depot at Cleburne Station on Wednesday night.
Wichita (14-11) clung to a 2-1 lead for much of the evening before the Railroaders (9-16) moved in front with two runs in the bottom of the eighth. Blake Grant-Parks grounded a two-run single up the middle against Wingnuts reliever Jackson Sigman (1-0), giving the Railroaders a 3-2 advantage.
The Wingnuts began the comeback against Cleburne reliever Tyler Wilson (2-2) with a single off the bat of Abel Nieves. On the next pitch, Fernando Perez pounded an RBI double to right-center, scoring Nieves from first to tie the game at 3-3. Tony Thomas laid down a sacrifice bunt that moved Perez to third, then Wilson hit John Nester and Ryne Willard on consecutive pitches to load the bases. Logan Trowbridge was summoned from the bench to pinch-hit, and took a 3-2 pitch just off the outside corner to force home the go-ahead run. Logan Watkins followed with a two-run single to right that stretched the lead to 6-3.
Sigman came back out for the bottom of the ninth and retired the Railroaders in order, striking out Levi Scott looking to end the game and stretch the Wingnuts winning streak to four.
It took just four batters for Wichita to grab an early lead. Watkins led off the game with a walk, then came around to score when Nieves singled to right and Cleburne committed two errors on the play. Perez drove home Nieves with a groundout to second, providing Wichita starter Travis Banwart with a 2-0 cushion. Banwart had to battle through five innings, allowing seven hits and a pair of walks while striking out five. He allowed his lone run in the fourth on an RBI fielder's choice from Grant-Parks, but was forced to settle for a no-decision.
Felix Carvallo kept the Wingnuts in command with a pair of scoreless innings in the sixth and seventh, striking out two.
The Wingnuts wrap up their series with the Railroaders on Thursday night, with Jordan Cooper (2-2, 4.66) going up against Jared Mortensen (0-1, 1.88) for Cleburne. First pitch is scheduled 7:05 PM, and will be broadcast on 1410 AM/93.9 FM KGSO, TuneIn and americanassociationbaseball.tv.
