Kane County Cougars News Release

GENEVA, Ill. - The Kane County Cougars (36-36) weren't able to overcome an early deficit, as they coughed up their first loss to the Cleburne RailRoaders (36-36) with a 6-5 loss in front of 8,602 at Thursday night at Northwestern Medicine Field.

After trialing 6-1 through two innings, the Cougars tallied four unanswered runs thanks to an 4th inning RBI hit from Hector Sanchez, a 7th inning run-scoring single from Armond Upshaw, and a bases loaded hit by pitch in the 8th. The Cougars' bullpen kept their team in the game all night long, as Cam Opp, Logan Nissen, AJ Jones combined for 4 shutout innings.

Thursday's game was dictated by Cleburne's explosive 1st inning against Cougar starter Jack Fox (6-7). The RailRoaders sent 10 batters to the plate and scored five runs on five hits and two walks. Fox only coughed up one more run after his rough first, though, and stretched his outing out five full innings.

Cleburne starter Travis Perry (5-6) didn't cough up a hit until the 4th, but earned a quality start to improve to 5-6. Nick Gardewine worked a perfect 9th for his fifth save of the year.

Upshaw also made a highlight reel catch in the 5th in center field, robbing Ryan Hernandez of a hit. With the loss and a Lake Country loss, the Cougars match Cleburne for a 3rd place tie in the East Division.

The Cougars continue the series with the Railroaders on Friday night. Cleburne will send right-hander Michael Wong (0-2, 4.73 ERA) to the bump, while Cougars' righty Westin Muir (4-2, 3.82) takes the bump. Upcoming promotions for the series with Cleburne include Stranger Things Night on Friday, The Sandlot Night on Saturday, and Princess Day on Sunday.
