Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
GRAND PRAIRIE, TX- The Gary SouthShore RailCats climb over .500 for the first time in 2016, but needed extra innings to get there. For the second straight night, the RailCats (16-15) needed bonus baseball to claim victory, this time a 5-3 win in the series opener against the Texas AirHogs (13-18).
Karl Triana started for the RailCats and threw eight innings and allowed three runs. He surrendered five hits and struck out five batters. Travis McGee earned his first win of the season after throwing a scoreless 11th inning. Taylor Black recorded the save in a perfect bottom of the 12th.
Cody Hebner struggled but limited the damage on the mound for Texas. He threw 5.2 innings and allowed three runs on five hits. His five walks almost cost him more runs, but his seven strikeouts bailed him out. Alan Oaks was the losing pitcher after allowing two runs in one inning.
The RailCats struck first with a two-run 1st inning. Cameron Newell and Matt Petrone scored after getting on board with a walk and double respectively.
The AirHogs scored a run in both the 4th and 5th before the Cats regained the lead an inning later. Frank Martinez walked and scored on a Jarred Mederos single.
Then, Texas scored in the bottom of the 9th inning to force extras and prevent Triana from factoring in the decision despite his brilliant performance.
The RailCats' heroics came in the top of the 12th when Petrone singled to start the inning. The outfielder hit a go-ahead home run yesterday in Lincoln. The Cats loaded the bases with a Jeremy Hamilton walk and Martinez reaching on an error. EJ Devarie delivered the go-ahead RBI with a single. Gary SouthShore added insurance when Jose Gonzalez was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Black's save sealed the deal, improving the RailCats to 4-2 in extra innings games.
The RailCats and AirHogs battle again on Tuesday, June 21st at 7:05 for game two of the three game series. You can catch the action starting with the Mansard's Pre-Game Show at 6:40 on 95.9 WEFM and online at railcatsbaseball.com.
