WINGNUTS GRAB FIRST PLACE

The Wichita Wingnuts grabbed sole possession of first place in the South Division for the first time in 2016 by virtue of their 9-7 win over the Laredo Lemurs Monday night at Uni-Trade Stadium. Wichita grabbed the lead early, as T.J. Mittelstaedt hit a two-run shot in the first. The visitors stretched their lead to 5-0 in the fifth, on an RBI groundout by Brent Clevlen and two-run single by Martin Medina. Laredo got on the board for the first time in the home half of the fifth, taking advantage of a pair of Wichita errors to score three unearned runs against Jon Link. Link did not allow any other runs over his seven innings, turning in his fifth straight quality start. The Wingnuts started to stretch their lead back out on sacrifice flies by Christian Stringer and Dustin Geiger in the sixth and seventh innings, respectively. Wichita then pushed the lead to six in the eighth on an RBI double by Zack Cox and fielder's choice grounder by Medina. The Lemurs scored four times in the ninth, again taking advantage of two errors, but closer Frankie Reed retired pinch-hitter Jesus Posso with the bases loaded to close it out.

LINK MAKES HISTORY

Veteran right-hander Jon Link made history with his victory over Laredo last night, as it was the 28th of his Wingnuts career. The win pushes Link past lefty Ryan Hinson, who had 27 victories with Wichita from 2011-13. Link's victory also gave him wins in five straight starts, all of which have been quality starts, with each outing lasting at least seven innings. Over those five starts, the righty has yielded just five earned runs over 37.0 innings. The former VCU Ram has also racked up 27 strikeouts over this current run, while allowing just five walks.

MITTELSTAEDT MASHING

With his two-run home run last night, T.J. Mittelstaedt collected his fifth of the season, two shy of Brent Clevlen's team-leading seven. The bomb temporarily gave Mittelstaedt the club lead in RBIs, but an RBI later by Clevlen evened the pair up with 24 apiece. The California native also leads the American Association in walks with 30, is tied for second in the AA with 11 doubles, sits fourth in the league with 17 extra-base hits, and owns the third-highest on-base percentage in the league at .460.
