
RailCats Win Behind Coombs Complete Game Effort 7-1

GARY, IN- Morgan Coombs tossed his second complete game of the year as the Gary South Shore RailCats returned home from their seven game road trip to beat the St. Paul Saints 7-1 Friday night at US Steel Yard.
After a 1-2-3 top of the first by Morgan Coombe the RailCats jumped on Saints starter Nick Barnese getting a lead off single from Danny Pulfer. Drew Martinez worked a walk to put runners at first and second. Zac Mitchell put down a sac bunt that Barnese threw low and away at first to allow Mitchell to reach and Pulfer to score from second. Craig Maddox then drove in both Martinez and Mitchell and the RailCats had a 3-0 lead.
The Cats would add to it in the second when Barnese hit Ryan Brockett with a pitch to start the inning. The RailCats would load the bases with Danny Pulfer and Drew Martinez reaching with a hit a piece. With the sacks full of Cats Craig Maddox was hit by a pitch to bring home Brockett and it was 4-0 South Shore.
The Saints got their only run in the third with a one out walk by Jared McDonald off of Coombs. Dwight Childs then followed with a single and runners were at first and second. Sam Maus then stepped up and delieverd and RBI single to make it 4-1 scoring McDonald. The RailCats would answer in the bottom of the fifth all with two outs. Cody Bishop walked and was followed by Josh Romanski who reached on an error by Saints first baseman Angelo Songco . Ryan Brockett then cleared the bases with a triple and it was 6-1 RailCats. Drew Muren got Brockett home with an double to add to the Gary lead at 7-1.
Coombs held St. Paul to six hits in his 125 pitch performance adding eight strike outs to even up his record at (4-4) while Barnese dropped to (3-5). The teams will play game two tomorrow night at 6:10pm with RHP Dustin Crenshaw (5-3)(2.71) going for the South Shore while RHP Drew Gay (0-0)(3.15). For tickets go to RAILCATSBASEBALL.COM.
