Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

Schaumburg, Ill. - Steve Haake's three-run triple highlighted a four-run sixth inning as the Gary SouthShore RailCats came from behind to defeat the Schaumburg Flyers 8-2 on Friday. The RailCats snapped a four game losing streak with the win and improved to 4-11 on the year. Schaumburg falls to 11-3.

The Flyers built a 2-0 lead behind starting pitcher Kenny Deross, who did not allow a base hit over the first five innings. Jarrod Patterson's run-scoring single in the first made it 1-0, and Josue Lopez's RBI double in the fourth made it 2-0.

But Gary rallied in the sixth to take the lead. Alex Taylor led off the inning with a single to right, the first hit of the night for the RailCats. Eric McNamee followed with a single to right and Jay Pecci's bunt single loaded the bases with no one out. Haake then drilled a triple to right center as all three runners scored to give the RailCats their first lead.

Andy Rohleder blasted a three-run home run in the eighth and Steve Booth added a run-scoring single later in the same inning to give the RailCats their winning margin.

RailCats starting pitcher Jason Shelley earned his first win after two losses, working five innings, allowing six hits and two runs with three walks and five strikeouts.

Relievers Ryan Burnau, Kris Regas, and Ryan Miller combined to shutout Schaumburg over the final four innings to close out the RailCats first comeback win of the season.

Taylor, Pecci, and Booth each had two hits as part of a 10-hit RailCats attack.

The two clubs meet in game two of the series Saturday at 6:20 p.m. Jeff Mault (0-1, 3,48) will make his first start for Gary after six relief appearances. Former major leaguer Rick DeHart (1-2, 13.19) will start for Schaumburg.

The RailCats released pitcher Neal Frendling prior to Friday's game and signed reliever Jeremy Schmidt as a free agent. Schmidt was recently released by the Cincinnati Reds organization.
