JackHammers Drop Fourth Straight

CALGARY, ALBERTA, CANADA-The Joliet JackHammers and Calgary Vipers fought a see-saw battle complete with 15 runs, 22 hits, and three tied scores. In the end, the Vipers won 8-7 on a ninth inning throwing error by JackHammers first baseman Jayson Drobiak.

Joliet started the scoring in the first inning when the second batter of the game, John Lackaff hit a solo home run over the left-field wall off Calgary starter Frank James. Joliet had a 1-0 lead after one inning.

In the second inning, the former Viper J.D. Foust victimized his team for a solo home run. He pulled a pitch by James over the left-field wall to give Joliet a 2-0 lead.

Calgary went to work in the bottom of the second inning. Drew Miller led off the inning with a walk. Adam Shorsher then lined out and was followed by Yosvany Alamrio's walk to push runners up to first and second for Sam Rosario. Rosario hit a ground ball to the JackHammers short stop Billy Boyer. His throw to first was picked out of the dirt by Jayson Drobiak. Drobiak dropped the ball and Miller scored to cut the lead to 2-1.

The Vipers roughed up JackHammers starter Kevin Cheppenko for three runs on four hits in the third inning. They took a 4-2 lead.

Joliet tied the game in the fourth inning with a two-run single by J.D. Foust. In the fifth inning, the Vipers scored a run on a throwing error by Billy Boyer. The JackHammers tied the game at 5-5 with a fifth inning solo home run by Chad Ehrnsberger.

Calgary took a 6-5 lead with a seventh inning solo home run by Josh Carter. The lead increased to 7-5 with an eighth inning RBI single by Manaubu Kuramachi. The JackHammers tied the game at 7-7 with a two-run double by J.D. Foust in the eighth inning.

In the ninth inning, Amad Stephens walked Drew Miller. There were two outs. Catcher Adam Shorsher followed by striking out but Greg Stephens dropped the third strike of the at-bat. The JackHammers catcher threw to first base and hit Shorsher in the back. Miller, who was off with the pitch, stole second and went to third base on the play. After the ball hit Shorsher in the back, Jayson Drobiak retrieved the baseball and overthrew the third baseman John Lackaff to allow Miller to score the winning run.

Amad Stephens (0-1) takes the loss for Joliet. Jon Huizinga (1-0) gets the win for Calgary. The JackHammers fall to 4-9 with the loss.

The JackHammers now look ahead to Saturday afternoon when they take on the Vipers at 2:35. Pregame coverage starts at 2:20 in the Chicagoland area on 1340 WJOL.
