
RailCats Release Frendling; Add Former Reds Prospect

Gary, Ind. - The Gary SouthShore RailCats Professional Baseball Club announced today that pitcher Neal Frendling has been given his unconditional release. The RailCats have replaced Frendling on the 22-man roster by signing free agent pitcher Jeremy Schmidt, who was recently released by the Cincinnati Reds organization.
Frendling, a resident of Crown Point, Indiana, made three starts for the RailCats and posted a record of 0-1 with an earned run average of 11.17. The product of Lake Central High School had battled back from three arm surgeries to make his first professional appearance since June, 2004, but allowed 19 hits over nine and two-thirds innings.
Schmidt is in his fifth year of professional baseball. He appeared in 53 games out of the bullpen last season in the Reds system, mostly with Double-A Chattanooga. He posted a 4.14 earned run average for the year with a 3-8 record. In 2004, Schmidt enjoyed a strong year with the Reds top Single-A club at Potomac, working in 35 games and posting a 2.45 ERA with a 2-4 record while limiting opposing batters to a combined average of .221. Schmidt spent the 2002-'03 seasons in the San Francisco Giants organization. He is 26 years old.
The RailCats play in Schaumburg against the Flyers Friday, Saturday, and Sunday before opening a three game series with Joliet at U. S. Steel Yard in Gary starting Monday night at 7:00 p.m. Call (21() 882-2255 for ticket information.
