June 2, 2006 - Northern League (NL)
Schaumburg Flyers News Release

It was bound to happen sooner or later, the Flyers bullpen ended their thirteen game run of scoreless innings tonight at Alexian Field as the Flyers dropped their third game of the season to the visiting Gary SouthShore Railcats 8-2.

Flyers shortstop Geoff McCallum led things off with a hit in the first inning. McCallum then stole second and scored when Jarrod Patterson singled to bring him in for the Flyers to take the early 1-0 lead.

In the fourth, the Flyers took the 2-0 lead off of a pair of back to back doubles. Flyers right fielder Ben Van Iderstine led the inning off with a double. He was then brought in the very next batter, when first baseman Josue Lopez doubled to bring him in. Lopez then reached third when left fielder Nelson Gord laid down a text book bunt down the third base line. Gord moved into scoring position when he stole second. Both players were stranded when the next two Flyers batters popped out to end the inning.

Flyers starter Kenny Durost held the Railcats hitless through five innings before giving up three hits to lead off the sixth and load the bases. Railcats designated hitter Steve Haake then tripled, clearing the bases taking the 3-2 lead. Center fielder Jermaine Allensworth then brought in Haake from third when he sent a sac-fly into left fielder Nelson Gord's glove.

The Railcats extended their lead 7-2 in the eighth when the Flyers bullpen gave up their first runs of the season as right fielder Andy Rohleder hit a three run shot into the Bud Light Party Patio. The Flyers bullpen threw their first 45.1 innings without giving up a single run.

The Railcats picked up another run in the eighth when Steve Booth drove in Nathan Haynes to take the 8-2 lead before the Flyers could get out of the inning. The Railcats jammed ten hits into the final four innings.

The Flyers were unable to get much going in the final five frames; they were threatening in the eighth but were unable to get anyone across the plate. The Flyers had two on in the ninth but the Railcats finished things off when Rob Watson grounded into a double play to end the game.

Flyers starter Kenny Durost picked up his first loss on the season. While Jason Shelley registered his first win for the Railcats, improving his record to 1-2.

The Flyers and the Railcats will continue their three game series tomorrow at Alexian Field. Game time is set for 6:20 p.m., a Fireworks Show will follow tomorrow's action.
