Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
GARY, Ind.-The RailCats batted around in back-to-back innings en route to a 15-3 drubbing of the Normal CornBelters on Monday in their final exhibition game.
After falling behind 3-0 early, the bats came alive. Mike Rohde singled in the third and scored on a Mike Massaro double to bring the RailCats to within two.
In the fourth, Rico Washington led off with a double, then three straight walks and a hit by pitch brought the score to a 3-3 deadlock. Adam Klein then highlighted the inning with a bases-clearing double over the head of the center fielder to give the RailCats the 6-3 lead.
Gary sent ten batters to the dish in a five-run fourth and followed suit in the fifth sending 11 to the plate. Jason James led off with a triple off the top of the wall down the right field line. Kyle Haines and Craig Maddox failed to get James home, but the next seven batters reached base with two outs. Rohde walked to put runners on the corners, then four straight singles by Brandon Gregorich, Chris Carrara, Klein and Massaro gave the RailCats the 10-3 lead. Washington registered a two-run single of his own later to put the RailCats up 12-3.
Rohde completed his day with an RBI-single in the sixth and an RBI-ground out in the eighth. Ryan Babineau added a double in the eighth that scored Brian Kolb.
Starting pitcher Andrew Johnston allowed three runs on six hits through the first two innings but kept the damage to a minimum, getting Normal to ground into two key double plays. He settled down nicely and gave up just the three runs over 4 2/3 innings. The RailCats bullpen was nearly flawless, throwing 4 1/3 scoreless innings. T.J. Wohlever shined in the seventh, striking out the side.
The RailCats finish out the exhibition season on Tuesday in an intraquad scrimmage game before heading to St. Paul to start the regular season on May 17th.
