Goldeyes Acquire Southpaw from New Jersey

WINNIPEG - Winnipeg Goldeyes manager Rick Forney announced today the acquisition of left-handed pitcher Matt Fairel from the New Jersey Jackels of the Can-Am League for a player to be named later.

Fairel, 24, has played the last three seasons in the Cincinnati Reds organization. In an injury-hampered 2011 campaign, Fairel made seven starts at Advanced-A Bakersfield of the Carolina League, going 0-6 with a 12.09 ERA. He also appeared in four games, including three starts, with the Reds' rookie team in the Arizona League. He went 1-1 there with a 3.46 ERA.

Fairel reached Double-A Carolina of the Southern League in 2010. In 10 starts with the Mudcats, the product of Winter Haven, Florida posted a 5-3 record and 3.98 ERA. He also made 10 starts with Advanced-A Lynchburg of the Carolina League in 2010, going 5-1 with a 3.04 ERA.

The 6-foot-3 southpaw was drafted by the Reds out of Florida State in the 35th round (1,049th overall) in the 2008 MLB amateur draft. He was also drafted by the San Francisco Giants in 2006, but did not sign.

With the addition of Fairel, the Goldeyes have filled the final spot in their starting rotation, which also includes Ace Walker, Chris Salamida, Matt Rusch and Fabian Williamson.

Fairel is expected join the team tomorrow in Kansas City for Winnipeg's final pre-season game against the T-Bones.

Winnipeg also removed left-handed reliever Anthony Friesen from its training camp roster. Friesen was in camp as a non-roster invitee.

The Goldeyes now have 24 players signed for the 2012 season, including 11 pitchers and 13 position players. American Association teams must declare their Opening Day roster of a maximum of 23 players by tomorrow at noon.

Winnipeg faces the St. Paul Saints tonight at Midway Stadium at 7 p.m. TSN 1290's pre-game show with Paul Edmonds begins at 6:30 p.m.
