Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
Gary, Ind. - Six runs in the first two innings and a one-run, complete game performance from Sioux City's Luis Mateo was too much for Gary on Father's Day at U.S. Steel Yard as the RailCats were swept by the Explorers after losing 8-1 in the series finale. Gary was outscored 19-3, went 1-for-27 with runners in scoring position and never led in the three-game series.
Sioux City (23-7) took the opening lead for the third straight game with four runs in the top of the first. Back-to-back RBI doubles from Nate Samson and Jay Baum gave the Explorers an early 2-0 advantage. Two batters later, Dexture McCall doubled the X's lead with a two-run double to right.
Gary (15-13) quickly responded with their only run in the bottom of the first. Alex Crosby led off the frame with a double down the right field line for the 200th hit of his career before Andy De Jesus advanced him to third with a groundout to first. Mitch Glasser followed De Jesus with an RBI groundout to the left side of the infield, scoring Crosby.
The Explorers scored two more runs in the second to go up 6-1. Jordan Edgerton increased the Sioux City lead to 5-1 with a solo home run halfway up the left field foul pole. Michael Lang then drew a walk before Nate Samson flipped an opposite-field single to right, giving the X's runners on the corners. Baum followed with a sacrifice fly to center, bringing in Lang from third.
Sioux City added another run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly from McCall to go up 7-1. The RBI for McCall was the last of his three on the day and the fifth of the series for the first baseman. David Kerian delivered the final run of the afternoon with a pinch-hit, solo home run to left-center in the seventh, giving the X's their biggest lead of the entire series.
Jeff McKenzie (2-1) was charged with the loss in his first career start vs. Sioux City. The southpaw went seven innings, allowing a career-high-tying eight runs on a season-high 14 hits, two walks and two strikeouts.
Keaton Steele retired six of the eight batters he faced, one via a strikeout, in two scoreless innings out of the bullpen. Mateo (4-2) allowed just one run on seven hits, walked none and struck out five in his first Independent Professional Baseball complete game.
