RailCats Sweep Doubleheader on Thursday

GENEVA, Ill. - The Gary SouthShore Railcats earned a sweep over the Kane County Cougars in a doubleheader with 6-4 and 7-1 wins on Thursday at Northwestern Medicine Field.

In game one, the Railcats (24-32) jumped out to a quick lead against Cougars' starter Luke Westphal (0-2). Jesus Marriaga got the scoring started with an RBI single in the first. Gary added three more in the second on an RBI fielder's choice by Daniel Lingua, a wild pitch, and an RBI single by Gio Diaz to go ahead 4-0.

The Cougars (24-31) struck back in the bottom of the second against Gary starter Julio Vivas (4-3). With two outs in the frame, Donivan Williams launched a solo homer over the left field wall to make it 4-1.

Gary added to its lead in the top of the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Jackson Valera to make it 5-1. However, in the bottom of the sixth the Cougars began to come back. Armond Upshaw led off the inning with a walk before stealing second. Following two outs, Gio Brusa was hit by a pitch to put runners at first and second. Jimmy Kerrigan, Daniel Wasinger, and Harrison Smith then hit three straight RBI singles to pull the Cougars within a run.

After the Cougars rally, the Railcats added an insurance run in the top of the seventh. Thomas Greely came in to score on a double play ground ball to put Gary ahead 6-4. In the bottom of the seventh, DJ Wilkinson slammed the door with three straight outs to clinch a 6-4 win for Gary.

In the second game of the doubleheader, the Railcats once again jumped out to a lead. After the first two innings were scoreless for both teams, Gary struck for three runs in the third against Cougars' starter Tyler Beardsley (4-4). Lingua led off the frame by reaching on an error. Following a strikeout by Victor Nova, Seth Cadell walked to put runners at first and second. Michael Woodworth then hit an RBI single to make it 1-0. The Railcats added two more on a single to right-center field by Jackson Valera to go ahead 3-0.

The Railcats stretched the lead in the top of the fifth on an RBI triple by Diaz and a groundout by Valera to make it 5-0. The Cougars struck for their lone run against starter Edward Cuello (2-5) in the bottom of the fifth. Harrison Smith doubled to lead off the inning before coming home on a sacrifice fly by Galli Cribbs Jr. to make it 5-1.

Gary went on to add two more on a home run by Seth Caddell and a single by Marriaga to push the lead to six runs. On the mound, Cuello tossed a seven-inning complete game. The right-hander allowed just one run on five hits to earn his second victory of the season.

The Cougars will remain at Northwestern Medicine Field for the next three games as they take on the Sioux Falls Canaries.
