RailCats Sign Catcher Tyler Smith

GARY, IN - The RailCats signed catcher Tyler Smith to a contract and released left-handed pitcher Mike Hanley on Tuesday.

Smith is a former member of the Kansas City Royals organization after a successful collegiate career at Arkansas State.

In 2011, Smith signed as an undrafted free agent with the Royals and appeared in 21 games with the Royals rookie ball affiliates in Idaho Falls and Burlington. Tyler had 10 hits in 56 at-bats with one double, one home run and drove in five runs during the 2011 season.

Last year, he appeared in five games for Idaho Falls and had three hits in 11 at-bats including a solo home run.

Smith played his final two years of collegiate baseball at Arkansas State after starting for two years at Three Rivers Community College. In his senior season at Arkansas State, Smith started 50 games behind the plate and hit .263 with eight doubles, two home runs and 29 driven in.

Tyler is the ninth player since the 2009 season to sign a professional contract from Arkansas State's baseball program.

Mike Hanley appeared in five games for the RailCats recording a 0-0 record and 0.00 ERA. In six innings, he allowed seven hits, two runs (none earned), walked two and struck out one. The Keystone College product last appeared on Monday recording 3 2/3 innings of relief allowing four hits, two unearned runs and one walk.

The RailCats continue their three-game series with the Amarillo Sox tonight at 7:05 p.m. The game can be heard live on 89.1 FM The Lakeshore beginning at 7:00 p.m.
