St. Paul Saints News Release
ST. PAUL, MN - The fun and games that go on around the baseball game for the St. Paul Saints have often been called one of the best comedy routines in minor league baseball. It's only fitting that the Saints will honor one of the greatest sports comedy routine's ever with an ode to Abbott and Costello.
On Sunday, June 9 at 1:05 p.m. the Saints will pay tribute to the 75th Anniversary of the legendary bit by Abbott and Costello, "Who's On First?" While many casual Saints fans have been asking this question for years, for the first time in the franchises 21-season history, when someone asks, "Who's on First" the person next to them can respond, "How did you know?" Saints players will wear specially designed uniforms with the corresponding name on the back of their jersey with the position they play. So instead of Joey Becker playing third base for the Saints, "I Don't Know" will be the man in your scorebook.
While Saints players will don these special uniforms, the first 500 fans 14 and under will receive special replica jersey's with one of the names on the back. Just make sure when your friends yell out the name on the back of your jersey, you are aware they are talking to you.
The great routine was first performed on The Kate Smith Hour radio program in February, 1938. Abbott and Costello performed the routine on numerous occasions, but rarely exactly the same way twice. In 1956 a gold record of "Who's on First?" was placed in the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown, New York. A video now plays continuously in the Hall. In 1999, Time magazine named the routine Best Comedy Sketch of the 20th century. An early recording was placed in the Library of Congress National Recording Registry in 2003 and in 2005 the line, "Who's on First?" was included on the American Film Institute's list of 100 memorable movie quotes.
