RailCats Score Six Unanswered to Take Series Finale

Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

Down 5-0 in the third inning, the Gary SouthShore RailCats came roaring back to stun the Quebec Capitales and earn the series split with a 6-5 win Sunday afternoon.

For the third time in four games, Quebec (2-2) got to the RailCats (2-2) starter early, scoring two runs in the first inning and three more in the third on a Josue Peley blast over the wall in left field.

But in true RailCats' fashion, the team chipped away at that lead.

Zac Mitchell singled in Roger Bernal in the bottom of the third and then made it a 5-3 game in the sixth on a J.D. Pulfer double off the wall and an Adam Taylor sacrifice fly.

The rain then began to fall and the 'Cats bats came alive in the eighth. Three straight hits made it a one-run game with nobody out.

Then, with two down, pinch hitter Sam Lind tapped a grounder in the hole at second and pitcher Jamaine Cotton bobbled the catch, allowing the tying run to come home.

Then next batter, Michael Vaughn, untied it with a line drive single to left to give the 'Cats their first lead of the game.

Jessie Snodgrass worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning to earn his first save to go with his win on Friday.

In relief of starter Chris Cummins, the SouthShore bullpen - Snodgrass, Kevin Osaki and Shawn O'Neill, combined for four one-hit innings to keep the RailCats close.

Right fielder Drew Martinez is hitting .500 after the season's first series and left fielder Adam Taylor leads the team with three runs batted in.

Next, Gary hits the road for a four-game series against division rival Lincoln. The 'Cats and Saltdogs first square off at 6:35 p.m. Monday. Lefty Rene Solis gets his first start for Greg Tagert's club and Right-hander Luis Chirinos is expected to start for Lincoln.
