St. Paul Saints News Release
ST. PAUL, MN (May 24, 2015) - The rain drops never stopped on Sunday evening at CHS Field, but that didn't dampen the offense for the St. Paul Saints who pounded out a season high 15 hits and scored a season high 12 runs as they swept the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks with a 12-5 victory in front of 7,193. The Saints set a franchise record for a four game series by drawing 31,754 in their first four games at CHS Field.
Up and down the lineup the Saints proved dangerous with eight of nine players collecting hits. In the first the first four hitters reached on base hits. Alonzo Harris led off the bottom of the first with a double. He scored on an RBI single from Sam Maus to make it 1-0. Willie Argo followed with a single and Ian Gac continued his torrid start with an RBI single to make it 2-0.
With the Saints leading 3-2 in the fifth Argo walked with one out. He stole second and Ian Gac was intentionally walked. Mike Kvasnicka made it 4-2 with an RBI single. Gac scored on a wild pitch to make it 5-2. An RBI triple by Angelo Songco gave the Saints a 6-2 lead and he scored on a wild pitch that made it 7-2.
In the sixth Argo tripled and Gac doubled him home to make it 8-2.
The Saints put the finishing touches on the game in the eighth. Leading 8-3 they put up another four spot. Maus led off the inning with a double. With one out Gac recorded his third RBI of the game with a single. He finished the night 3-4 with a double, three RBI and two runs scored. Gac finished the series 10-14 with a home run and eight RBI. Kvasnicka doubled to put runners at second and third and Songco followed with a three-run blast to right, his first of the season. He finished the night 2-4 with a triple, home run and five RBI.
Saints starter Jeff Shields was solid going 5.0 innings allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits while striking out five. Mike Zouzalik tossed 2.0 perfect innings of relief.
This is the first time since 2008 that the Saints have swept the opening homestand of a four game series when they did it against the Grand Prairie AirHogs. The last time they swept an opening homestand of any kind was in 2010 when they took all three from Wichita. The 1993 Saints, in their first season at Midway Stadium won their first four games at home.
The Saints will have Monday off and travel to Potter County Memorial Stadium to take on the Amarillo Thunderheads in the first game of a three game series on Tuesday evening at 7:05 p.m. The Saints send LHP Pedro Hernandez (0-0, 5.40) to the mound. The game can be heard on Club 1220 KLBB.
