ST. PAUL, Minn. - The RailCats came back from a two run deficit and scored three in the eighth on their way to a 5-4 win over the Saints in their season opener.
The RailCats threatened in the first off of starting pitcher Danny Gutierrez. Adam Klein walked, stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch with nobody out. After Mike Massaro struck out, Mike Coles hit into a fielder's choice, with Klein being thrown out at home. The 'Cats then had two on with two out, but Jason James flew out to end the threat.
St. Paul also had a runner at third with none out in the first, but Jim Rapoport was cut down at home plate on a fielder's choice to keep the game scoreless. He had tripled off of RailCats starter Mike Perconte to start the inning. Willie Cabrera led off the bottom of the second with a homer to left to give the Saints a 1-0 lead. Former RailCat Tanner Townsend hit a solo shot of his own in the fourth to put the Saints ahead by two.
Perconte gave up two runs on five hits in five innings, with a walk and two strikeouts.
Gutierrez settled in after struggling in the first, holding the RailCats to just one hit and facing the minimum over the next four innings. However, he walked Chris Carrara on four pitches to lead off the sixth and came out of the game with an injury.
Billy Spottiswood came on in relief and was greeted by a single by Adam Klein. Mike Massaro bunted the runners over to second and third and Mike Coles followed with a two-run double to left to tie the game at two. The Saints answered in the bottom of the eighth against RailCats reliever Chad Rhoades. Ronnie Borquin hit an RBI double and Townsend hit a run-scoring single to cut the lead to one. Will Krout came on in relief and after an error put runners on the corners, got Adam Frost to ground into a double play to end the inning with the RailCats still in front.
Krout retired the first two batters in the ninth before Shane Costa reached on a bunt single. Ole Sheldon grounded out to end the game.
T.J. Wohlever (1-0) pitched a scoreless seventh inning for the win, while Krout picked up the save. Reid Mahon took the loss for St. Paul after giving up all three runs in the eighth.
The series continues on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. The RailCats starting pitcher is TBA.
