Fargo-Moorhead 3, El Paso 1

Pitching and defense highlighted a tightly contested morning contest between the El Paso Diablos and the Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks to open the 2012 American Association season. Fargo-Moorhead squeezed out a 3-1 victory over the home Diablos in front of a crowd of 4,219. The Diablos struck first in the bottom of the third with an RBI single by 3B Maikol Gonzalez. Fargo-Moorhead, however, struck right back. In the top of the fourth, RedHawks 2B Carlo Cota drove a double into the left field gap to tie the score. Later in the inning, Fargo-Moorhead plated two more on an RBI ground out by DH Marcos Rodriguez and a sac fly by C Todd Jennings. RedHawks RHP Kenn Kasparek held El Paso through 6.1 innings, allowing one run on four hits and striking out four. Kasparek earned the win and RHP Tom Boleska struck out the side in the ninth to get the save.

Sioux City 7, Sioux Falls 3

The Sioux City Explorers fell behind early but plated five runs in the third inning to take the lead and cruise to a 7-3 win over the Sioux Falls Pheasants. Four Sioux City players collected two hits on the night, including DH Tyler Goodro who went 2-for-5 with a run scored and three RBI. Explorers starting pitcher Nick Schumacher notched the win after going seven innings and allowing two earned runs on five hits. C Al Quintana hit a solo hit home run in the fifth inning for the Pheasants in the loss.

Wichita 8, Lincoln 6

The Wichita Wingnuts fell behind 1-0 after an inning of play but responded with five runs over the next three innings to erase the deficit and beat the Lincoln Saltdogs, 8-6. The Wingnuts 2-3 hitters of 3B Jared McDonald and DH John Rodriguez went a combined 4-for-7 at the plate with three runs scored and two RBI. Rodriguez would also add his first home run of the season. Starting pitcher Derek Blacksher picked up the win for Wichita as he gave up an earned run on two hits in five innings of work. Wingnuts reliever Josh Dew allowed an unearned run in the ninth inning but came away with the save.

Gary SouthShore 5, St. Paul 4

Gary SouthShore plated three runs in the eighth inning to break a 2-2 tie and edge the St. Paul Saints 5-4 at Midway Stadium in St. Paul. RailCats DH Adam Klein and 2B Chris Carrera each collected two hits on the night while LF Michael Coles drove in a pair of runs. Gary SouthShore reliever TJ Wohlever tossed a scoreless seventh inning to collect the win. SS Tanner Townsend had a 3-for-4 night with a run and two RBI for the Saints in defeat.

Laredo 5, Grand Prairie 1

Laredo wins their first game in their inaugural season in the American Association as they top the Grand Prairie AirHogs, 5-1. 3B Yunesky Sanchez went 2-for-3 with a run scored and three RBI to lead the Lemurs offense. LF John Allen also chipped in with two hits of his own for Laredo. Lemurs starter Todd Privett picked up the win as he tossed five innings and gave up an earned run on five hits. 3B Andres Rodriguez had two hits for the AirHogs.

New Jersey 17, Kansas City 7

It was all New Jersey in this one as the Jackals scored 13 runs over the first four innings and won going away by the score of 17-7 over the Kansas City T-Bones. Danny Santiesteban had a big game for the Jackals as he went 4-for-5 with three runs scored and three RBI. 3B Nick Giarraputo and 1B Steve Casares each had three hits for New Jersey and C Jeff Lanning scored three runs. Jackals starter Isaac Pavlik was the winning pitcher for the Jackals.
