Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
AMARILLO, Texas - The RailCats rallied from a six-run deficit to tie Amarillo in the ninth, but fell on a walk-off single by Mitch Abeita in the bottom of the inning in a 9-8 loss on Friday night in the series opener. The RailCats record drops to 13-14 on the season.
With two out and a runner on first in the bottom of the ninth, Abeita hit a fly ball down the right field line. RailCats right fielder Mike Massaro tried to make a diving catch near the line, but it was ruled the ball came out of his glove in fair territory, as pinch-runner Garrett Rau came around to score the winning run from first.
Craig Maddox hit a game-tying RBI single with two outs and two strikes in the ninth inning to complete the 'Cats comeback from an 8-2 deficit. The RailCats scored a pair of runs in the seventh, eighth and ninth to tie the game.
The RailCats got on the board quickly, as Klein led off the game with a double and Massaro drove him home with a single to make it 1-0 in the first.
In the second inning, Adam Buschini blasted a two-run homer to left off of RailCats starter Kyle Wilson to give the Sox a 2-1 lead.
The Sox piled up five runs on six hits in the fourth inning to increase the lead to 7-1. Abeita and Jason White each hit two-run singles in the inning.
Maddox crushed a two-out RBI double to right in the sixth to cut the deficit to 7-2. The Sox came right back with a run in the bottom of the frame to take an 8-2 lead before the RailCats began their comeback.
Chris Allen (3-2) gave up the game-winning hit in the ninth for the loss. Starter Kyle Wilson took a no-decision for the RailCats, giving up eight runs in 5 1/3 innings.
Chase Johnson (1-0) suffered his first blown save of the season in the ninth but picked up the victory. The series continues on Saturday night at 7:05. Morgan Coombs (2-1, 3.55) will start for the RailCats.
