Bats Go Silent Again

June 15, 2012 - American Association (AA)
Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

Friday night in Sioux City, four Explorers pitchers gave up 10 hits to Winnipeg, but the Goldeyes could manage only one run in a 3-1 loss to the Explorers.

It was Winnipeg's third straight defeat and dropped the team's overall record to 18-9, still good enough for first place in the American Association's North Division. However, the lack of clutch hitting for a third game in a row - it's the first time Winnipeg has lost three in a row this season -- has to concern manager Rick Forney.

"We had a few opportunities, like in the first inning, but it's hard to get two hits with two outs let alone get three or four hits in a row at any time," said Goldeyes pitching coach Bill Pulsipher on the TSN 1290 Post-Game Show. "We got 10 hits tonight, but none of the timely kind. As I said, we just didn't get three or four hits in a row. That's three games in a row where you just have to tip your hat to the other team's starting pitcher."

Sioux City put up single runs in the first, third and seventh off starter Matt Rusch while Winnipeg scored its only run in the fourth inning when second baseman Yurendell de Caster hit a solo homer. De Caster is the only Goldeyes hitter who has driven in a run in the first two games in Sioux City.

It was the second straight night in which the Goldeyes had banged out at least 10 hits, but couldn't score more than two runs.

Rusch (3-1, 2.15) suffered the loss, his first of the season, despite allowing just three runs over 6.1 innings of work. Alain Quijano (2-2, 2.20 ERA) got the win while Chris Bodishbaugh picked up his seventh save of the season.

"You aren't going to feel your best every time and Matt didn't have his best stuff today," said Pulsipher. "But the mark of a great pitcher is to have a guy who goes out there and works hard, works through those nights when he doesn't have is best stuff, and gets his outs and gives us a chance to win. Matt did that. He worked hard tonight."

The Goldeyes and Explorers will play Game 3 of this four-game series on Saturday night in Sioux City. Fabian Williamson (2-3, 3.72 ERA) will get the start for the Goldeyes. Paul Edmonds will call the game on TSN 1290. Game time is 7:05.
