El Paso Diablos News Release
LAREDO, TX- Laredo Lemurs left-hander Matt Way (3-2) was nearly unhittable against the Diablos on Friday night, limiting El Paso to no runs on just one hit while throwing a complete game to give Laredo a 4-0 victory in game two of the three game series at Uni Trade Stadium.
Way had it going from the very first pitch, retiring the first nine Diablos before Maikol Gonzalez led off the fourth with the first and only hit for El Paso, who managed only five total baserunners on the night. The southpaw also struck out nine and walked three en route to his first complete game of 2012.
Diablos starter Freddy Flores (0-2) pitched well but took the loss in what turned out to be El Paso's quickest game of the season, finishing in just a little over two hours. Flores allowed four runs on nine hits, striking out three and walking three but received no run support from his offense, which was shut out for just the second time in 2012.
The Lemurs jumped on Flores for an early run when former Diablo Javier Brito singled in Anthony Scelfo to give Laredo a 1-0 lead in the first. The only other scoring frame of the game came in the bottom of the fourth, when Ernie Banks Jr. doubled in two runs and Phillip Incaviglia bunted home another to give Laredo all the runs they would need.
Relievers Blake Cull and Marcel Prado each threw scoreless innings for the Diablos, who dropped their fifth straight to the Lemurs, and the first of the five by more than one run.
The Diablos will try and salvage the series in the finale on Saturday before leaving for the second leg of the road trip in Kansas City. First pitch is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in Laredo and 6:30 p.m. El Paso time.
