Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
Kansas City, KS July 21, 2015- The offensive output that the RailCats had enjoyed the last 10 days was shut off abruptly Tuesday night in a 1-0 shutout loss to the Kansas City T-Bones at Community America Ballpark. Both teams were locked in a scoreless pitcher's duel through the first seven innings when the RailCats blinked first.
Chuck Fontana came in for Gary in the bottom of the eighth and issued a one out walk to Alex Marquez. He then struck out Jacob Hayes for out number two. It looked like the game might stay even but Kansas City got a single from Ryan Cavan to put runners at the corners.
Nate Tenbrink, who the night before could not deliver the key hit off of Andy Roberts, did not waste his chance tonight. Tenbrink rolled a solid single through the right side of the RailCats infield with two outs to get the only run the Bones would need.
Fernando Hernandez, who came in for Kansas City in the top of the eighth did make it interesting in the ninth. Ryan Cavan made a good play on a line shot from Jon Jones to the right of second for out number one. Hernandez, then followed by walking Michael Vaughn and Adam Taylor. Tillman Pugh ran for Vaughn and went to third on a fly to deep center by Jose Sermo. Roger Bernal stepped up and hit a hard line shot to down the first base line that Jake Blackwood was able to stab and field for the final out of the game.
The RailCats had chances in the game. They had two on in the first and no outs and had JD Pulfer gunned down at the plate. The South Shore also had a runner at second and two outs three times but could not get the hit to bring the runner around. In the fourth fifth and sixth the leadoff man reached off of T-Bones starter Bobby Doran.
Doran tossed a quality start going seven scoreless innings giving up three hits. The RailCats had a great effort from Travis McGee, who worked five innings of scoreless ball. McGee retired the first 11 he faced before allowing his first hit and only hit of the night.
The RailCats got an inning of scoreless relief from Shawn O'Neill and Chris Bodishbaugh in the loss. Hernandez (3-3) was the winner while Fontana (3-2) was charged with the loss.
The two teams will wrap up the four game series Wednesday night with RHP Charle Rosario (9-3, 3.49) set to go for Gary while Kansas City will send out RHP Casey Barnes (2-3, 3.00). The first pitch is set for 7:05pm from CommunityAmerica Ballpark in Kansas City. The game can be heard on 95.9 WEFM and online at RailCatsBaseball.com.
The RailCats return home Thursday night to open a four game series with the Sioux City Explorers at 7:10pm at US Steel Yard.
