Joplin Blasters News Release
Laredo, TX-The Blasters shortest contest of the season ended in disappointment as Laredo took game two 1-0 on a bottom of the ninth walk-off base hit Tuesday night at Uni-Trade Stadium.
Joplin (30-24) received one of its best pitching performances of the season from Nestor Molina. Molina worked eight scoreless innings and scattered four hits with seven strikeouts and no walks. He did not factor in the decision after retiring the first ten batters he faced.
Laredo (31-26) has now won seven of nine games played against the Blasters in the season series. The Lemurs stretched their winning streak to three with the game's lone run in the bottom of the ninth. Victor Capellan came on in relief to pitch the ninth and gave up a lead-off infield single to D'Vontrey Richardson. Dustin Geiger then reached as he was hit in the leg by a pitch. Denis Phipps moved the runners up to second and third on a sacrifice bunt. Kevin Taylor was intentionally walked to load the bases. With the infield drawn in, Juan Silverio collected the game-winning base hit on a liner to right that scored Richardson to end the two-hour affair.
John Brebbia posted the win for Laredo. Brebbia (5-2) pitched an inning and struck out one. Victor Capellan took the loss for Joplin. Capellan (4-2) worked one-third of an inning and allowed one earned run on two hits with one walk and a hit batter. The two teams combined for just ten hits in the game. D'Vontrey Richardson, Juan Silverio, and Jeudy Valdez all had two hits for the Lemurs. Laredo stranded seven runners while the Blasters left just two men on base. There were no errors in the contest.
Joplin closes out its three-game series at Laredo with the finale Wednesday night. First pitch at Uni-Trade Stadium is set for 7:30. The Blasters then travel to Grand Prairie for a four-game set starting Thursday night.
