Blasters Grounded in Laredo

Laredo, TX-The Blasters started a seven-game road swing through Texas with a 9-2 loss to Laredo Monday night at Uni-Trade Stadium.

Joplin (30-23) had its three-game winning streak snapped and is now just 2-6 against the Lemurs this season. The Blasters began the night well with a single run in the first frame. With one out, Mitch Glasser stroked a line-drive double past the first-base bag and up the right side. The next batter, Yasser Gomez, scored Glasser with an RBI single up the left field line.

Laredo (30-26) waited until the fourth to produce, scoring four times in the inning to seize control. Following a fly out, Ty Morrison walked and stole second. D'Vontrey Richardson tied the game with a double to left. Dustin Geiger singled to left for a 2-1 lead. Denis Phipps tripled to the wall in left-center and it was 3-1. Kevin Taylor then singled to left for a 4-1 cushion.

In the fourth, Dustin Geiger sent a towering fly ball to left that cleared the fence for a two-run home run and a 6-1 Laredo advantage. D'Vontrey Richardson scored on the dinger after he had singled to shallow center. The Lemurs scratched another run across in the fifth and added two more in the sixth on a two-run scoring single by Brian Peterson. The Blasters plated the game's final run on a bases loaded walk of Oscar Mesa in the eighth.

On the mound, Luis Pollorena posted the win for Laredo. Pollorena (4-1) worked five innings and gave up just one earned run on six hits with two strikeouts and no walks. For Joplin, Jorge Martinez suffered the loss. Martinez (6-3) went four innings and gave up six earned runs on eight hits with six strikeouts and three walks. He had struck out four through the first two scoreless innings. Joplin used four pitchers on the night and struck out a season-high 13 batters.

At the plate, Laredo outhit Joplin 17-to-10. The 17 hits tied the most allowed by the Blasters pitching staff in a single game. Denis Phipps and Brian Peterson both collected three hits. Phipps scored twice and Peterson drove in two. Dustin Geiger went 2-for-5 with the homer, two runs, and three RBIs. D'Vontrey Richardson had two hits with two runs and two RBIs. For the Blasters, Mitch Glasser finished 3-for-5 with one run. Yasser Gomez, Omar Luna, and Jesus Solorzano all posted two hits in defeat. Joplin grounded into five inning-ending double plays in the game. The Blasters also stranded 11 runners.
