Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
GARY, IN- The RailCats scored four runs in the 5th inning and never looked back in a 5- 1 victory of the Winnipeg Goldeyes. Gary SouthShore (25-20) smacked seven hits to avoid a sweep at the hands of the Goldeyes (23-23).
It hard hit ball after hard hit ball for the RailCats all night long. The team had seven hits a night after they only managed four, but there were countless balls that were hit well but didn't find holes. Hitting Coach Bobby Spain was seen clapping and congratulating RailCat hitters even after outs due to the good contact they were making.
The Cat hitter found the holes in the 5th inning against Mikey O'Brien. Jeremy Hamilton led off with a line drive and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Randy Santiesteban flared a ball to shallow right field and Hamilton scored safely in a peculiar play at the plate. The throw was on time but Hamilton dipped around the tag of Carlton Tanabe but missed the plate. After the acrobatic maneuver, Hamilton had to dive back towards home and tap the plate ahead of a second tag attempt from Tanabe.
The inning continued with Jarred Mederos getting hit by a pitch and Alex Crosby reaching on a fielder's choice. Matt Petrone walked to load the bases and Brennan Metzger walked in a run. Tillman Pugh continued to pour it on the Goldeyes with a RBI single to make the score 4-0.
That lead was all RailCats starter Karl Triana needed. The Colombian was dominant in a seven-inning outing. He gave up one run on three hits and tied his season-high with seven strikeouts. Christian Herstine and Jorge de Leon combined to handle the final two innings and solidify the win. De Leon was just added to the team and spent parts of two seasons with the Houston Astros.
Pugh had two hits for the RailCats and Metzger extended his on-base streak to 14 games. Petrone was solid, reaching base twice and knocking in a run. The RailCats improved to 12-5 when they don't commit an error.
The RailCats' homestand continues with a four-game series against the Wichita Wingnuts. First pitch tomorrow is at 7:10 PM and coverage begins at 6:45 on 95.9 WEFM and railcatsbaseball.com.
