RailCats First Trip to New St. Paul Digs Turns into a Night To Forget
June 20, 2015 - American Association (AA)
Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
St. Paul, MN - The Gary South Shore RailCats had an early morning wake up call for the eight hour drive from Northwest Indiana to the Twin Cities. It did not take that long for the RailCats to find just how good of a season the (23-4) St. Paul Saints are having in the American Association. In the RailCats first inning in their first visit to the Saints new ballpark CHS Field, St. Paul broke out for eight runs on six hit to never look back in a 15-2 win Friday night.
The Saints put on the kind of show that would validate their league leading .301 team batting average and the best overall record. The RailCats allowed season highs in runs scored in an inning (8) and hits in a game as the Saints pounded out 17 hits on the way to the series opening win. The 15 runs surpassed the previous high of 11 the team surrendered on May 21 against Quebec. St. Paul got a four RBI night from Alonzo Harris, who added his third home run of the year and picked up three RBI nights from Willie Argo and Vinny DiFazio.
The Saints also have the league's best ERA and that showed in the game as well. Former big leaguer and lefty Pedro Hernandez (4-1), tossed seven solid innings with the RailCats only able to scratch out two runs on seven hits. Hernandez never was in any real trouble unlike RailCats starter Charle Rosario (4-2), who was charged with the loss. Rosario gave up 10 earned runs on eight hits over four innings. Rosario entered the game with an ERA of 3.80 left the game with an ERA of 6.32 in the loss. After the Saints sent 11 to the plate in the first off of Rosario they never looked back.
St. Paul added another five earned runs on nine hits off of RailCats reliever Kevin Osaki in his three innings of work for Gary. The bright spot of the night for the South Shore was first baseman Michael Schroeder and native of Crown Point, Indiana. Schroeder, who was a duel threat in college, as both a pitcher and hitter, worked a 1-2-3 eighth inning of relief for the RailCats. He also added an RBI double earlier in the ball game.
The two teams will play game two of the three game series Saturday night at CHS Field in St. Paul. The RailCats, will send out LHP Andy Roberts (0-2, 4.06) while the Saints will counter with RHP Robert Coe (3-0, 1.68). The game can be heard on 95.9 WEFM and online at RailCatsBaseball.com with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05pm. The Indiana Wesleyan Pregame show will begin at 6:45pm.
