
Koch Hits For Cycle But Explorers Fall To Canaries 9-6

Explorers catcher Matt Koch hits for the cycle but the Explorers fall to Sioux Falls 9-6 in the ninth inning on a three-run walk-off home run.
Sioux City scored the first run of the game in the top off the second off a Brock Kjeldgaard solo shot (seventh home run of the year), but in the bottom half of the inning Sioux Falls answered. David Bergin and Richard Stock both singled to start it, with both runners advancing off a balk to put them at second and third. With Bergin in scoring position, an easy 6-3 grounder scored him at first to tie it.
In the third, X's catcher Matt Koch doubled to start the top half. Tim Colwell singled which advanced Koch and put runners at the corners with no one out. Koch went on to score from third off a 1-6-3 RBI groundout by Explorers centerfielder Matty Johnson to regain the lead. Sioux Falls took the lead in the bottom of the third off a two-run single by Richard Stock.
In the fourth inning, X's shortstop smacked his first home run of the year on a two-run-no out homer to tie and retake the lead 4-3 after three and a half innings. Sioux Falls kept battling with an RBI double by Jason Repko in the bottom of the fourth.
The Canaries went on to score a run in the bottom of the six to make it 5-4, but in the seventh Matt Koch had himself a solo-homer to make it even once more.
In the top of the ninth, Sioux City third-baseman Tommy Mendonca led off with a double, advanced to third on a base-hit by Matt Koch and then scored off a SAC E1 to take the lead once again 6-5.
The Canaries went on to win it in the ninth by a score of 9-6. Sioux Falls started the inning with three straight singles and then tied it an error by the pitcher to make it 6-6. On the next at-bat the Canaries would win it off a three run walk off homer by RJ Perucki to end the Explorers win streak.
Staring pitcher for the Explorers was Dustin Loggins. The right-hander got the no decision going 3.1 innings, allowing four runs on six hits with one walk. Jimmer Kennedy, Anthony Ferarra, Rob Wort and Jose Flores would pitch in relief on the night. Jose Flores would be charged with the loss allowing the winning run to score in the ninth.
The starter for Sioux Falls was left-hander Joe Bircher who went six innings and allowing four earned runs. Winning pitcher for the Canaries would be Cameron McVey who pitched in the ninth received the win. ,
The big hitter for the Explorers was catcher Matt Koch, who accomplished one of baseballs highest honors hitting for the cycle with two runs and an RBI as well. Sioux City finished with six runs on eleven hits with three errors in the contest.
Explorers will play the third and final game of the series on Father's Day, first pitch-4:05. They'll start a three game series with the St. Paul Saints at the new CHS field on Monday (June 22nd).
