Wichita Wingnuts News Release
KANSAS CITY, KS - For the first time in the 2015 season the Wichita Wingnuts are experiencing a losing streak. The Kansas City T-Bones scored in each of the first six innings, including multiple runs in four of them, on their way to a 13-8 win on Saturday night at Community America Ballpark. The Wingnuts left 12 men on base in suffering their third straight defeat.
The offensive onslaught began in the bottom of the first inning again Tim Brown (3-1). With two outs Kansas City went on a run of four straight base hits and took advantage of one defensive miscue to grab three runs. Jake Blackwood doubled and scored when Adam Bailey reached on an infield single and T.J. Mittelstaedt threw the ball wide of first. Kyle Robinson followed with a double of his own and Robby Kuzdale drove in a run with a base hit. Kuzdale was caught stealing to end the first.
Joe Rapp led off the second with a solo home run for Kansas City (10-14) to extend the lead to 4-0. In the third, Blackwood doubled for the second time and Robinson batted in another run to make it 6-0.
The Wingnuts (16-11) got to T-Bones starter Bobby Doran for the first time in the fourth inning. Joash Brodin extended his hit streak to 11 games with a solo home run and then three consecutive singles loaded the bases for Luis Hernandez. The second baseman bounced a fielder's choice groundball to the left side to plate a run and get within 6-2.
Nate Tenbrink blasted a two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth to push the lead back to six before the clubs traded runs in the fifth inning. Wichita loaded the bases with one out, but the only offense they could muster was Mittelstaedt's fielder's choice grounder. Rapp drove in his second run of the game with a two-out single to make the score 9-3.
Brown lasted five innings, his shortest outing of the season, and allowed nine runs on 13 hits. The T-Bones blew the game open in the home half of the sixth inning against Shawn Talkington when two walks and an error loaded the bases for the clean-up hitter. Adam Bailey lined a grand slam to the berm in right field to extend the lead to 13-3.
The Wingnuts were able to add some late offense to make the game competitive in the final innings. Dustin Geiger's sixth home run of the season scored the team's fourth run in the eighth. Josh Tols came out of the T-Bones' bullpen for the ninth and was jumped on by the bats of the Nuts. Matt Padgett began the inning with a double and moved to third on a groundball to short by Brodin. Mittelstaedt drew his third walk of the game to put runners on the corners before John Nester scored both with a double. Geiger traded places with Nester by knocking his own RBI double. Leadoff hitter Jayce Ray grounded a base hit into right to allow Geiger to cross the plate and pull the Wingnuts within 13-8. Jared Messer was called in from the bullpen and retired Alberto Gonzalez on a ground ball to end the game.
Bailey led all hitters with four hits, four RBI, and three runs scored. Geiger paced the Wingnuts with three hits and Ray added a pair of his own.
The series finale will take place at 1:05 p.m. on Sunday afternoon and will feature a match-up between RHP's Jason Van Skike and Casey Barnes.
