Goldeyes Bust out in Fargo

June 20, 2015 - American Association (AA)
Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

A day after spraying the ball all over Bel Acres golf course as part of the Field of Dreams Foundation's annual golf tournament, the Winnipeg Goldeyes hopped on the bus, drove three hours south and sprayed the ball all over Newman Outdoor Field.

The Goldeyes belted 19 hits and scored nine runs in the top of the second inning alone in a 16-3 win over the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks Friday night.

The win begins a three-game weekend set in Fargo on the right foot and puts Winnipeg in a position to win their third series of the season Saturday night.

After Fargo opened the scoring with a run in the bottom of the first inning, Josh Mazzola took RedHawks starter Austin Kirk deep to left field for his fourth home run of the season to lead off the top of the second. It gave Mazzola his third home run in as many games. The Goldeyes didn't stop there, though.

Following the homer, Brad Boyer singled in Jon Weber, Ramon Ortega hit the next pitch down the right field line to score Boyer and Adam Heisler singled in Ortega to give Winnipeg a 4-1 lead. Casey Haerther then singled to load the bases and Nic Jackson drew a walk after falling behind 0-2 to score Winnipeg's fifth run of the inning. That brought Mazzola back to the plate and he sent a 2-2 pitch from Kirk over the left field fence again for a grand slam and his second home run of the inning.

Neither side scored in the third inning, but the Goldeyes made up for in the fourth inning by scoring five more runs. Boyer and Ortega had RBI singles, Heisler hit a sac fly and Haerther ripped an RBI double down the right field line.

Fargo scored singles in the bottom of the fifth and seventh innings, but the Goldeyes added on two unearned runs in the ninth to restore the 13-run cushion.

The RedHawks chipped in a run in the bottom of the ninth.

Including pinch hitter Kyle Brandenburg, all 10 Goldeyes position players had at least one hit, while Heisler, Boyer and Alen had three hits each. Mazzola racked up five RBI on his two home runs and Boyer had three RBI.

Lost in the massive crooked numbers was a superb start by Goldeyes starting pitcher Coby Cowgill, who went 6 1/3 innings, allowing three runs and striking out two. It's Winnipeg's first quality start by someone other than Nick Hernandez since Matt Jackson's quality start on June 2.

Tony Smith came in from the bullpen and pitched 2 2/3 innings of relief to finish the game.

Cowgill picked up the win - his first of the season. Kirk, who didn't make it out of Winnipeg's nine-run second inning, suffered the loss.

The second game of the series goes Saturday night in Fargo. The Goldeyes will have Rob Nixon (1-3, 7.16) on the bump. Fargo is scheduled to send Taylor Stanton (0-1, 5.40) to the hill. Coverage on Jewel 100.5 FM begins with Around the Association at 5 p.m. Game time is 6 p.m.

Tickets for all Goldeyes games in 2015 are available through Ticketmaster by clicking on Goldeyes.com, calling 1-855-GOLDEYE or visiting any Ticketmaster location, including the Shaw Park box office.
